Employment Trends

Over the past five years the Northern Territory Public Sector has progressively employed more people in Equal Employment Opportunity groups such as Indigenous Australians, women, people with disability and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

This has happened because the Northern Territory Public Sector is committed to giving everyone a “fair go” at employment, training and promotion.

The Northern Territory Public Sector employment trend figures rely on people from Equal Employment Opportunity groups identifying themselves when they start their job so these figures may not be 100 percent accurate.

Some employees may not choose to identify themselves as being part of an Equal Employment Opportunity group for fear of stigma or discrimination about their ability to perform their job.

Of all people employed by the Northern Territory Public Sector (as at 30 June 2009):

  • 62.6% are women
  • 40% are women in executive management (EO1 - ECO6)
  • 8.1% are Indigenous Australians
  • 1.8% are people with disability
  • 4.0% are people from culturally diverse backgrounds
