Building Capability
Building Workforce Capability
The Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment (OCPE), as the statutory employer of all Northern Territory Public Service (NTPS) employees, has a central role in developing sector wide policies to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Like all contemporary organisations, developing workforce capacity is critical to the NTPS. The hallmarks of a modern workforce include greater flexibility and agility, more mobility, greater customisation of services, increasing influence of technology and social media and the effects of globalisation. If we are to meet these challenges we must make the most of the talents, skills and knowledge of our workforce.
Developing skills and fostering a philosophy of lifelong learning in our existing workforce will be the key in overcoming labour market challenges such as skills shortages, an ageing workforce and changing societal values.
Policies and employment programs
OCPE have established guidelines on mobility/exchange and mentoring. These initiatives can be undertaken individually or as part of a formal structured program.
There are a range of programs aimed at attracting people from a variety of backgrounds to enter a career within the NTPS. Early career starters entering the NTPS are encouraged to view employment programs such as the Apprenticeship Program (NTPS Guidelines) and the Competency Based Assessment Training Scheme (CBAT). There is also a Graduate Development Program Policy for graduates from a range of disciplines. For more information about starting a career within the NTPS go to the Department of Business and Employement website.
