Building Capability
Mobility
We know that today's workforce is increasingly mobile, not just within the Territory, but also within Australia and internationally. Career mobility is a means by which the NTPS can build capability across the whole sector. It can help us perform more efficiently and effectively whilst at the same time support employees in achieving their career aspirations.
NTPS supports mobility and secondments for staff in a range of situations. Examples of this could include:
- Overseas exchanges or job swaps
- Placements in other jurisdictions or Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) agencies
- Secondments to academic institutions
- Voluntary work in humanitarian organisations
The NTPS has a policy paper "Broadening Our Horizons: Avenues for Career Mobility" which establishes guidelines to promote stronger ties within NTPS agencies, and other organisations throughout Australia and internationally.
The policy outlines opportunities through which employees in one agency or sector can accept placements or temporary assignments in another agency or sector, thereby promoting the sharing of knowledge, business practices and processes across sectors and encouraging the professional and personal development of employees.
The NTPS policy is one mechanism that supports our endeavours to develop a flexible and innovative workforce that is capable of meeting the challenges of the future.

Transferable Skills
Our workforce and workplaces benefit in many ways from the exchange of knowledge and experiences. The skills you gain in one role or region can be extended to others, allowing you to build on your strengths and develop yours and others skills. By changing roles, you can keep and grow your professional network, learn about other business areas and contribute to the success of another area within the NTPS. You will find that many of the skills you currently have are very transferable or ‘portable’ and able to be used in a variety of positions. For example many skills gathered in a project management setting around communication, managing timelines and budgets, analysis and conceptual thinking are easily transferable to another setting.
