Remote Workforce Development

The Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) has a special role to play in improving health, education, infrastructure and other public services across the Territory.  To achieve this it is vital that the public sector attracts, develops and retains highly skilled employees in remote areas.

The Public Sector is committed to ensuring that all employees have ongoing developmental opportunities to strengthen their ability to provide exemplary services throughout the Territory.  Whilst acknowledging the importance of ongoing development for all employees the public sector recognises the unique challenges faced by its remote employees in accessing training and development opportunities.  Among these challenges are social and professional isolation, distance from major population and training centres, additional costs associated with accessing training and development opportunities and difficulties in arranging for replacement staffing on isolated communities.

The Remote Workforce Development funding (RWD) introduced in 2003, demonstrates the public sectors commitment to address these challenges and achieve equitable workforce development outcomes for remote employees. A key feature of this strategy commits $1 million per annum dedicated solely to the development of employees in remote localities.

Administration of the RWD funding is managed by each NTPS agency. Agencies are responsible in determining the training and development activities as part of the RWD funding.  If you are an NTPS employee, residing in a remote locality (refer to the Northern Territory remote localities map) and wish to access Remote Workforce Development funding please contact your departments RWD representative, refer to attached listing.
