The Northern Territory Public Sector endeavours to ensure that employees who provide services to the Territory community have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform their jobs at a high level. This is accomplished by recruiting on the merit principle, which provides that selections must be made “
on the basis of, and only on the basis of, the capacity of the person to perform in particular duties having regard to the person’s knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience, and potential for future development.”
It is the goal of Government that the Northern Territory Public Sector should reflect the diversity of the Territory’s population. To achieve this aim, efforts must be made to ensure that persons from equal employment opportunity groups (ie: Indigenous people, people from cultural diverse backgrounds, persons with disability, mature age persons, youth and women) are assisted to compete equally in merit-based selection processes. One method of doing this is to appoint persons to selection panels who have knowledge of equal employment opportunity issues and understand the requirement under anti-discrimination laws to make reasonable adjustment for the special needs of persons from these disadvantaged groups.
Currently application forms for NTPS vacancies include an Equal Employment Opportunity Questionnaire. If an applicant identifies that they are from an equal employment opportunity group, care should be taken to include on the selection panel a person with understanding of those issues.
