Equal Opportunity in the Workplace

All employees have a right to expect to be treated equally in all aspects of their involvement in the workforce.  This relates to recruitment, employment, career development and advancement, promotion and retirement and relied on the application of the principle of merit without regard to race, gender, impairment, marital status, religious/political beliefs or other non-merit related considerations.

As the NTPS is such a large employer, it is recognised that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to equity and diversity that would meet the needs of all agencies and their employees. For this reason, each agency is responsible for implementing its own Equal Opportunity Management Plan (EOMP).

Equal Opportunity Management Plan

An EOMP is a working document that sets out an agency's objectives, strategies and implementation details for ensuring equality of employment opportunity for all employees. Equal Employment Opportunity Management Plans are most effective when integrated with corporate, strategic and other agency planning processes.. Full details of the requirements of EOMPs are set out in Employment Instruction 11.

The NT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions offers example of a current EOMP within the Northern Territory Government.

If you are interested in finding out about your agency's EOMP, please contact your local Human Resources unit.
