Pandemic Influenza

On 11 June 2009 the World Health Organisation (WHO) formally declared the H1N1 Influenza 09 outbreak as a Phase 6 pandemic.  At the time of the declaration the WHO considered the overall severity of the influenza pandemic as moderate.

On 17 June 2009 the Australian Government announced a new response phase to manage the outbreak called PROTECT.  The new phase recognises that the infection with H1N1 Influenza 09 is not as severe as originally envisaged in that it is mild in most cases, severe in some and moderate overall.

The Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment has issued updated Northern Territory Public Sector Human Influenza Pandemic Employment Framework Guidelines effective from 30 June 2009.  The Employment Framework will formally operate under the authority of the Chief Minister acting on the advice of the NT Counter Disaster Council.  The Employment Framework Guidelines provide useful general advice to agencies and employees on employment related issues, such as the use of leave.  Agencies and employees should therefore familiarise themselves with the content of the Guidelines.
